Serum formulation analysis: can a lab tell what is in a face serum, essence, toner or sheet mask?

Short answer

We can investigate supported ingredients and formulation families in water-based face serums, essences, toners, ampoules and sheet-mask liquids.

We estimate supported proportions, but cannot reconstruct every trace ingredient or the original manufacturing formula.

We need the actual product or whole wet mask, ingredient-list photos and any labelled reference or retained batch.

What are you really asking about the serum or essence?

Which ingredient families could make up a water-based serum?

Humectants can include glycerol, butylene glycol, propylene glycol and pentylene glycol, alongside polysaccharides such as sodium hyaluronate.

Functional-ingredient candidates include niacinamide, vitamin C and its derivatives, retinoids, peptides, ceramides and botanical extracts such as Centella-derived material.

Carbomer, xanthan or cellulose-family thickeners can accompany solubilizers and emulsifiers such as PEG hydrogenated castor-oil families.

Other contributions include pH adjusters, buffers, chelators, fragrance, colorants, phenoxyethanol and multifunctional polyols that can contribute to preservation.

Sheet masks add a substrate, with nonwoven, lyocell, biocellulose or hydrogel formats posing different separation questions.

Our wet-wipe guide explains the related squeezing, extraction and weighing approach for separating liquid findings from substrate findings.

Are you developing a similar serum or checking a changed batch?

For example, a brand owner developing a similar serum can ask which humectant, thickener and accessible functional-ingredient families characterize the reference.

For discoloration, thinning, precipitation or sharp odor, we would compare corresponding portions and storage histories; a changed ingredient does not alone prove the cause.

Label checking asks whether supported findings are consistent with named ingredients and approximate levels, rather than treating the ingredient list as measured composition.

How would we approach face serum deformulation or sheet-mask essence analysis?

1. We would confirm format and deformulation, comparison or troubleshooting aims, reviewing the ingredient list and reference and defining the liquid-versus-substrate scope.

2. We would measure pH, moisture and solids by suitable wet chemistry to distinguish concentration differences from changed ingredient families.

3. Where substrate and essence can be separated, we would recover liquid by squeezing or extraction and compare wet and cleaned-dry masses, recording losses for a per-sheet loading estimate.

4. We would use GC-MS for suitable fragrance constituents, glycols and accessible volatile or semivolatile preservatives, keeping the recovered-liquid basis explicit.

5. We would use high-resolution LC-MS and LC-MS/MS for suitable niacinamide, vitamin-C derivatives, preservatives and selected peptide or botanical markers, with UV-Vis as supporting evidence.

6. We would examine dried residues or separated portions by FTIR for distinguishable polysaccharide, carbomer or cellulose-family clues, studying mask substrate separately.

7. We would add ICP-OES or ICP-MS when relevant for zinc, copper or other elemental clues, without assigning a unique salt from its element.

8. We would reconcile the label and reference with an estimated formulation table, separating supported compounds, families, markers and unresolved contributions.

Why can these methods reveal different parts of an essence?

Water and solids establish a concentration basis, while separating the sheet reduces interference between substrate polymers and dissolved essence ingredients.

GC-MS separates suitable gas-phase molecules and reads mass-spectral patterns, supporting accessible fragrance, glycol and preservative findings.

High-resolution LC-MS adds accurate-mass clues; LC-MS/MS examines ion-fragment relationships in dissolved mixtures, while UV-Vis absorption supplies supporting rather than unique ingredient evidence.

FTIR reads bond-absorption patterns, helping assign distinguishable thickener or substrate families, but cellulose chemistry alone cannot identify a particular cellulose source.

Elemental methods identify elements rather than whole salts, and unequal recovery or measurement response prevents peak size from directly representing ingredient percentages.

What will the serum report say, and what remains unresolved?

The English PDF would include a conclusion card, component table, estimates, data appendix and unresolved items, stating whether results concern essence, substrate or whole mask.

These findings do not recover the factory recipe, raw-material suppliers or commercial grades; hyaluronate molecular weight and crosslinking remain outside the supported estimate.

Peptide sequences and exact peptide amounts often remain unresolved, while botanical findings cover supported markers rather than the complete extract composition or original dose.

Efficacy, penetration, skin feel, irritation, allergy, stability trials, shelf life, safety assessment and label-claim compliance are outside this composition study.

We report analytical findings, not a regulatory or legal determination.

Which skincare samples should you declare before sending?

Water-based serums, essences, toners, lotions and sheet masks need declaration review; attach ingredient-list photos.

Non-aqueous face oils, fragrance oils and aerosols are not received as supplied; declare them and discuss alternatives for review.

Ethanol-dominant toners are not received as supplied; declare the product and discuss alternative forms for review.

Medicinal ingredients or treatment claims are reviewed case by case after declaration.

Samples containing CBD or cannabis-derived ingredients are not accepted.

Use our inquiry page and shipping guide; ship after agreement, payment and an acceptance number.

FAQ

Does an unreported peptide prove that the serum contains none?

For a low-level serum ingredient near analytical limits, we would say no supporting evidence was found within scope, rather than claim absolute absence.

Can a botanical marker reveal how much extract was added?

A botanical marker in serum supports a limited finding, but variable extract composition prevents directly converting that marker into the original extract dose.

Is squeezed mask liquid the same as the full essence loading?

Squeezed liquid leaves retained material behind; a mask-loading estimate must account for residual solids, recovery losses and substrate changes, especially with hydrogels.
