Material identification and composition of unknown materials

What is this material, and how specifically can it be identified? Material identification may establish a polymer family, a crystalline ingredient, a supported organic compound or an elemental composition. These are different levels of evidence. Chengfenbao explains which level the sample and methods support, helping manufacturers and buyers describe an unknown material or compare it with a proposed replacement. A familiar appearance or a close analytical match does not, by itself, establish a supplier, trade name or unique commercial grade.

Discuss your sample

What we analyze

We investigate coatings and paints, inks, adhesives and sealants, rubber and elastomers, plastics and masterbatch, additives and raw materials, cleaners, lubricating greases, concrete admixtures, and cosmetics and personal care products. Explain where the material came from and the question you need answered. We confirm the sample form and arrangements before shipping.

An unfamiliar rubber part, a plastic pellet, a coating binder or a filler-rich ingredient can require different evidence. Tell us whether you need a broad material-family answer or a closer comparison with candidate references. A separated component can be more informative than an assembled item, provided its preparation is understood.

How we work

FTIR supports identification of many binder and polymer families. GC-MS and GC-MS/MS help investigate suitable accessible organic ingredients. High-resolution LC-MS and LC-MS/MS add evidence for suitable additives and unknown compounds. A mixture may support several ingredient findings rather than a single material name.

XRD provides evidence for suitable crystalline ingredients, while XRF, ICP-MS and ICP-OES describe relevant elements. We do not convert an elemental result directly into a unique raw-material identity. Wet-chemistry measurements such as moisture, solids content, pH or UV-Vis can help distinguish comparable samples where relevant to the question.

What you receive

The conclusion card answers the agreed question in plain language and relates the findings to the submitted sample. We distinguish analytical evidence from background information supplied with the inquiry.

The component table lists supported identities and estimated proportions. Some entries may be chemical families rather than individual compounds. Proportions are semi-quantitative estimates, not quantitative measurements; a complete formula is not promised.

The data appendix records the methods used and supporting evidence. A separate account of what could not be determined explains unresolved components, overlapping findings and relevant sample limitations, so your team can judge what the report supports.

How to start

Tell us the product type and use, available sample quantity, any known formulation information, what you want to find out and whether a reference sample is available. We reply within 24 hours and agree the analytical scope before issuing a fixed quotation in USD.

Samples accepted worldwide; contact us before shipping. We confirm sample quantity, packaging and documents with you first. Samples already in China can go by domestic courier. Request an NDA before sharing confidential details if needed. The quotation confirms the project schedule and delivery arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

Can you name a polymer from a finished part?
Often a polymer-family assignment is possible, but blends, fillers and curing can complicate it. We state the supported level of identification and any components that remain unresolved.
Can you identify a supplier or exact commercial grade?
Chemistry alone does not establish a supplier. Candidate reference materials can support a comparison, but even a close match may be shared by several grades or manufacturers.
Is an elemental result the same as compound identification?
No. Finding an element does not uniquely identify the compound containing it. We combine appropriate evidence where possible and label an elemental finding separately from an ingredient assignment.
What background helps with an unknown material?
Describe its use, physical form, processing history and any suspected material families. Include a suitable reference if available, and distinguish supplier claims from facts established by previous analysis.
